Texas Coastline

Beaches, Dolphins, Fishing, Ghost Crabs, and Family Memories

After years of traveling, we finally returned to the Port Aransas and Padre Island area, and it reminded us why this stretch of the Texas coast remains one of our favorite family beach destinations. Between dolphin sightings, late-night fishing, ghost crab hunts, beach days, and some surprisingly great food, we packed a lot into just a few days.

A Stop in San Antonio

On the drive down, we made a stop at the San Antonio Mexican Market and one of my favorite childhood restaurants, Mi Tierra.

I've been here hundreds of times over the years and still think it has one of the most unique atmospheres in Texas. The colorful decorations, bakery, mariachi music, and endless selection of pastries make it worth a stop every time. And yes, I still crave their coconut bars.

Padre Balli Park Beach & Fishing Pier

One of the first beaches we visited was Padre Balli Park.

This quickly became one of our favorite family beaches because it combines easy beach access, restrooms, the newly reopened Bob Hall Pier, and plenty of room for kids to play. If you're traveling with younger children, this is one of the easiest and most family-friendly beach setups in the area.

The pier itself was a destination all its own. Stretching more than 1,200 feet out into the Gulf, it was lined with fishermen almost every time we visited, with rods propped against the rails and bait buckets scattered along the walkway. Even if you aren't fishing, it's fun to stroll out, watch what people are catching, and soak in the atmosphere of one of the Texas coast's most iconic fishing spots.

Fishing at the Condo

One unexpected highlight was fishing from our condo pier in the evenings.

The fish were constantly jumping out of the water, creating excitement every few minutes. Unfortunately, they seemed much better at stealing our shrimp than getting hooked.

The fish definitely won most of those battles.

Mustang Island State Park

Mustang Island State Park ended up being one of our favorite beach days.

The weather wasn't ideal. It was cloudy, and double red flags meant no swimming. But honestly, it didn't matter.

The kids spent hours playing in the sand, exploring, collecting shells, and enjoying the coast. The beach feels more natural and less crowded than many of the nearby options.

If you're looking for a beach with a more outdoorsy feel, this is the one.

Packery Channel

Packery Channel is only minutes from our condo and became one of our favorite quick stops.

We watched brown pelicans diving for fish, fishermen lining the rocks, boats moving through the channel, and giant waves crashing through the pass.

One fisherman caught a stingray and was kind enough to let our kids touch and hold it before releasing it.

Experiences like that always seem to become the stories kids remember most.

Whitecap Beach

Whitecap Beach became our most-visited beach of the trip.

One evening we headed out after dark to hunt for ghost crabs. We only found a few tiny baby crabs, but the cool ocean breeze, dark skies, and endless stars made the evening worth it.

Another day we returned simply to enjoy one last beach day before heading home.

The best part?

Whitecap Beach was only about four minutes from our condo.

Roberts Point Park

If you want dolphins, start here.

Roberts Point Park was our favorite place to watch:

  • Dolphins

  • Large ships

  • Barges

  • Fishing boats

The kids also enjoyed the playground while we watched the harbor activity.

We even spotted sea turtles during our visit.

Padre Island National Seashore

We planned to visit Malaquite Beach but accidentally made a wrong turn.

Thankfully.

Instead of ending up at the more developed beach area, we found ourselves on a quieter stretch of coastline with fewer people and even more natural beauty.

Sometimes the best travel experiences happen when you miss your turn.

The sunshine finally appeared, and it ended up being one of our favorite beach days of the entire trip.

Sunset Dolphin Cruise

Our final adventure was a sunset dolphin cruise with Scarlett Cruises.

Watching dolphins surface around the boat while the sun slowly dropped toward the horizon was the perfect way to end the trip.

If you're trying to decide whether a dolphin cruise is worth it, I'd absolutely recommend it.

Best Sunrise & Sunset Beach

If you're willing to wake up early, Padre Island National Seashore is hard to beat for sunrise. The undeveloped coastline, natural dunes, and peaceful atmosphere make it one of the most beautiful sunrise spots on the Texas coast.

For a closer option, though, we absolutely loved Whitecap Beach for our final sunrise of the trip. Bonus points for being just minutes from our condo and equally beautiful at sunset.

Before heading home, we set our alarms one last time and made the short drive to Whitecap Beach, arriving around 6:05 for the 6:35 sunrise.

It ended up being one of our favorite moments of the entire trip.

The beach was nearly empty, and the sky looked like a watercolor painting as soft pinks, oranges, blues, and purples stretched across the horizon. The waves were calm, the air was cool, and for a few quiet moments it felt like we had the entire beach to ourselves.

If you're visiting the area, don't miss at least one sunrise. It's worth the early wake-up call.

Doc's Seafood & Steaks

We also returned to Doc's Seafood & Steaks, which brought back memories.

The last time we visited Port Aransas was nine years ago, and we ate here then too.

Nine years later, I found myself ordering stuffed flounder again.

Some traditions are worth keeping.

Fins Seafood

One of our favorite meals of the trip was at Fins Seafood, and it ended up being perfectly timed with one of our favorite activities.

I ordered the stuffed fish, which was absolutely delicious, while the guys went all in on the burgers and loved them. The real surprise hit for the whole table, though, was the onion rings—they disappeared fast.

What made it even better was the location. Fins is right next to the Scarlet Lady Dolphin Tour departure spot, so we were able to enjoy an early dinner and then walk straight over for our sunset dolphin tour without any stress or rushing.

Breakfast at Island Joe's

Before hitting the road, we made one final stop at Island Joe's. Originally, breakfast was supposed to be at the condo, but the ants had other plans and devoured much of our food overnight.

The building itself is worth seeing. The coffee shop is built from repurposed shipping containers and has a fun, unique coastal vibe.

I ordered the Island Girl Latte, which was delicious, and the pimento cheese bacon and egg biscuit may have been one of my favorite breakfasts of the trip.

It was the perfect final meal before starting the drive home.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at a condo on Leeward Drive (technically a Corpus Christi address), and the location was hard to beat.

The condo was only about five minutes from Whitecap Beach, with walking beach access directly across from the property. It was also conveniently located near Packery Channel, Padre Island National Seashore, and Port Aransas, making it an ideal home base for exploring the area.

What We Loved

  • Plenty of room for our family of five

  • Pool for the kids

  • Fishing pier right outside our door

  • Easy access to multiple beaches and attractions

  • Central location between Corpus Christi and Port Aransas

What We Didn't Love

The ants.

Somehow they managed to find their way into food containers through the tiniest openings imaginable. They appeared overnight in cabinets and on countertops and were far more determined than any of us.

Despite our tiny ant invaders, we'd absolutely stay in this area again because the location was fantastic.

Then & Now: Returning to the Same Beach, Nine Years Later

Some of my favorite photos from the trip weren't of dolphins, beaches, or sunsets.

They were recreating photos taken on this same beach nine years ago.

Nine years ago, I was pregnant with the twins. Hawkins was four years old and happily letting us bury him in the sand.

Now the twins are nine, Hawkins is thirteen, and somehow we found ourselves standing in the same spots all these years later.

The beach looks almost exactly the same.

The kids certainly don't.

Sometimes the best part of returning to a favorite place isn't the destination itself. It's seeing just how much life has happened in between.

One Thing We Love About Texas Beaches

One thing that always surprises visitors is that many Texas beaches allow you to drive directly onto the sand.

As a family, we absolutely love this.

No hauling coolers for half a mile.
No carrying chairs, umbrellas, beach toys, towels, and snacks across long boardwalks.

Everything is right there when you need it.

It makes beach days easier, especially with kids, and allows us to spend more time enjoying the beach and less time transporting gear.

My Favorite Family Beach Tradition

There's one beach tradition I've never told my kids about.

For years, I've secretly ordered seashells from Amazon or picked them up at Hobby Lobby before beach trips.

When we're walking the beach, I quietly drop shells behind the family. Then, a few minutes later, we turn around and the kids discover what they think are amazing new shells that have magically washed ashore.

They have absolutely no idea.

I've been doing this since they were tiny, and watching their excitement never gets old. It remains one of my favorite family memories.

Final Sunrise & Trip Reflections

As we packed up and headed home, we realized the things we'll remember most aren't necessarily the beaches themselves.

We'll remember watching fish steal our shrimp bait from the condo pier.

Holding a stingray at Packery Channel.

Seeing dolphins surface near Roberts Point Park.

Hunting ghost crabs under the stars.

Watching the sunrise paint Whitecap Beach in watercolor colors.

And finding "new" seashells that mysteriously appear on the beach year after year.

The Port Aransas and Padre Island area gave us exactly what we needed: sunshine, salt air, adventure, and time together.

And sometimes, that's the best souvenir of all.

Catching waves and throwing peace signs.

Until next time, Port A.
